Don’t Quit

In today’s culture it has become increasingly common for people of all ages both male and female and from every background to have at least one tattoo. There are many believers who now sport Christian messages and symbols in a tattoo.  I like to tell people that I have one tattoo but I can’t show it to them.  I then explain that the reason that they can’t see it is because the tattoo is on my spirit and simply consists of two words – “Don’t Quit.”

According to Galatians 5: 22 one aspect of the fruit of the Holy Spirit is makrothumia which is variously translated as long-suffering, patience, endurance, constancy, steadfastness, or perseverance.

Hebrews 6: 11 – 12

11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end,  12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience (makrothumia) inherit the promises.

Amplified

11 But we do [strongly and earnestly] desire for each of you to show the same diligence and sincerity [all the way through] in realising and enjoying the full assurance and development of [your] hope until the end, 12 In order that you may not grow disinterested and become [spiritual] sluggards, but imitators, behaving as do those who through faith (by their leaning of the entire personality on God in Christ in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness) and by practice of patient endurance and waiting are [now] inheriting the promises.

It is through faith and patience [forbearance, perseverance, persistence, tenacity,
determination, staying power, steadfastness, purposefulness, endurance, application, diligence, dedication, commitment, doggedness, tirelessness, stamina, intransigence, obstinacy] that we inherit the promises – that we take possession of what God has promised.

I don’t know about you but I am very grateful that this is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.
